Rider Story: David Wade

Published Date:   June 30, 2010

Topic:   PMC News

As a Boston TV news reporter for the last 13 years, David Wade has covered hundreds of compelling stories. But there was something about this year's Boston Marathon that inspired him more than usual. "I was interviewing all of these amazing runners at the Boston Marathon," the WBZ, Channel 4 morning news anchor said. "They'd fought cancer, or lost a loved one to a disease, and here they were running 26.2 miles and raising money. I thought, what am I doing?" Wade admits he's not a runner. But he has always enjoyed casual bike riding, especially since his 4-year-old daughter, Danica, was born and he got a bike with a seat for her attached to it. He decided he would join the Pan-Massachusetts Challenge and ride alongside 5,000 other cyclists in the 31st annual PMC on Aug. 7 and 8. "I went out and I bought a bike. Now I have no excuses not to do it," he said. Wade will bike the one-day, 84-mile route, while raising money to support research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.  "I've covered news stories of people affected by cancer; I've had friends and family who have battled the disease," said Wade. "This is just one small way I can help. There are so many more difficult things in the world than pedaling a bike." Wade said he looking forward to being part of the PMC tradition – he wants to get Danica involved in PMC Kids Ride next year and he is already planning to recruit his colleagues for 2011.  Support Wade's ride in the PMC and his goal to raise $3,000 here.  Read about David's ride on Mix 104.1.
