In Honor of his Father...

Published Date:   June 11, 2013

Topic:   PMC News

In 2007, Boston resident John FitzGerald lost his father, former Mass. State Representative Kevin W. FitzGerald, to sarcoma.  Not only did John lose a parent, the Mission Hill and Jamaica Plain communities lost a passionate leader who had represented their interests for 27 years.

One year later, Team Kevin Fitz, a PMC team, was formed to ride in his honor. Members of the team include friends and family of the FitzGeralds, as well as, members of the communities for which Kevin had served.

For the last two years, John has been a member of the team, riding alongside a group of 23 cyclists of varying ages and cycling experience levels. Although the mission of the team is to ride and raise money to help fight cancer, the group has grown to become an extended network of family that unite together to support one another through the ups and downs of being directly or indirectly affected by cancer.

On Aug. 3 and 4, John, alongside his teammates, will ride the 190-mile PMC route from Sturbridge to Provincetown in honor of his late father. The team hopes to bring their collective fundraising total to nearly $500,000 for the PMC this year.

This Father’s Day, consider honoring Dad by riding, volunteering and raising money for the Pan-Mass Challenge, which supports lifesaving adult and pediatric patient care and cancer research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. One hundred percent of every rider-raised dollar goes directly to the Jimmy Fund.
