Covidien has Fun with PMC Kids at Patriot Place

Dr. Bob Moreau, of Franklin, is a pediatric dentist in Mansfield, MA who knows how to make kids smile.

A PMC rider and volunteer since 1998, Dr. Moreau does everything he can to make the PMC Kids Ride at Patriots Place a success. Before and after riding up to 190 miles in the PMC, Dr. Moreau helps the Covidien crew set up the PMC Patriot Place Kids Ride, and while he cannot be there during the mini bike-a-thon because he is riding with the adults, he is with the kids in spirit.

“I got involved because there was a great event for kids in my town and I wanted to be a part of it,” Dr. Moreau says. “It’s been as much fun for me as it’s been for the kids.”  For years, Dr. Moreau has donated a new children’s bike to aid in the fundraising effort.

Set for the Sunday of PMC weekend (August 4, 2013) at the Patriot Place water stop and finish line, the PMC Patriot Place Kids Ride expects more than 75 children, ages 3 to 14, to ride one of three available routes around Patriot Place in Foxborough. The Patriot Place Kids Ride is one of more than 35 PMC Kids Rides that take place throughout the year, attracting thousands of children who seek sponsors and ride routes of various configurations and mileage.  Each year, the PMC Kids Rides raise nearly $900,000 toward the PMC’s overall Jimmy Fund contribution.

What has now become the PMC Patriot Place Kids Ride was started by Covidien, a global healthcare products leader with its U.S. headquarters in Mansfield, five years ago as a small ride on the Covidien campus. The ride has grown to include local communities and businesses to create a larger and more exciting event.

Nearly 50 volunteers, including Covidien employees, have helped to establish the routes, which provide a unique opportunity to interact with the adult PMC riders coming through the water stop and finish line also at Patriot Place. The PMC Patriot Place Kids Ride will include activities before, during and after the ride, including a raffle, face painting, games and more. The ride hopes to raise more than $10,000.

“I love this kids’ event because it helps people in the Mansfield and Foxborough area to understand what the PMC does and it gets children involved even at the youngest ages,” Dr. Moreau says. “Maybe they will join the adult PMC when they are old enough to ride in the event.”

The PMC Kids Rides are spokes in the PMC wheel, joining the more than 5,500 adult PMC cyclists in their mission to fund adult and pediatric patient care and cancer research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through The Jimmy Fund. The PMC Kids Rides program has raised more than $4 million since it was founded in 1998. The PMC Patriot Place Kids Ride will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 4 at Patriot Place, Gillette Stadium in Foxborough. There is a $10 registration fee and a $25 fundraising minimum. PMC Kids Rides are Presented by the Yawkey Foundation.
