Rialto's Jody Adams Gives Young Cancer Patient Private Cooking Lessons

Last week, a budding young chef was given the opportunity to learn from one of the country's best during a special one-on-one cooking class.

Jody Adams, a nationally recognized chef, owner of Rialto restaurant and leader of Team Rialto, a first-year Pan-Mass Challenge team, invited the team's Pedal Partner Jessica Crane, for a fun afternoon of cooking and eating.

Jessica, 7, has leukemia. She was diagnosed in 2009 and is being treated at the Jimmy Fund Clinic at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Team Rialto is riding in the PMC in her honor.

Shaping the raviolis

Because she loves cooking and dreams of being a chef, Jessica was matched with Team Rialto through the PMC's Pedal Partner program. They met at the Pedal Partner party in May where Adams gave Jessica a signed copy of her cookbook. Before the party was over, Jessica was picking out recipes from the cookbook she wanted to try out at home.

During the cooking class in the Rialto kitchen in Cambridge, Adams, Jessica and Jessica's brothers Gregory and Mark together prepared homemade pasta for a ricotta ravioli with a cherry tomato sauce.

Looks delicious!

Team Rialto, featuring Adams and other restaurant staff, will take its inaugural PMC ride on August 6 & 7 in the 32nd annual PMC. The team has set a goal of raising more than $50,000 for cancer care and research. Jessica will be at the PMC's Pedal Partner Picnic at the Lakeville water stop along the PMC route to cheer the team on.

Adams is a James Beard award-winning chef with a national reputation for her imaginative use of New Englandingredients in regional Italian cuisine. Rialto, her four-star restaurant in Cambridge, has been named "One of the top 20 new restaurants in the country" by Esquire magazine and "One of the world's best hotel restaurants" by Gourmet.
