#PMC2014 Postscript from Billy Starr

Dear 2014 PMC Riders & Volunteers,

Safe to say that this past Saturday put the capital "C" in Pan-Mass Challenge. This year's edition grabs the gold ring as the "coldest sustained rain" in our 35-year history. While the conditions may have tasked individual will (particularly those without rain gear), the lasting memory I will take from this past weekend is the spirit and pride of this amazing community!

People are always looking for language to encapsulate the PMC essence but anybody can confirm what I witnessed this past weekend. While the mission is to the center of our work, the PMC community is a shining example of the best of human nature on display. Of course a project of this scope could not be achieved without the professional volunteerism of over 3,700 people covering 360 miles of infrastructure. But their jobs are made immeasurably easier because of the character of the 5,700 on bicycles. People of good intent doing good work with great resolve..and humor.

I would be remiss if I didn't tell you that among our prideful alumni were 55 DFCI doctors, clinicians and the DFCI Chairman of the Board, himself a 20-year rider. They are inspired by your example and grateful for your commitment. And we are grateful for theirs as well.

I am also pleased to share with you all the medical report: a million miles pedaled and a total of 10 transfers to the hospital; nine have been released and one is expected to fully recover from a concussion and be released today. 60 people were treated at waterstops for symptoms of hypothermia, transported to MMA, and released.

I hope the collective memories you carry from PMC 2014 will continue to 'warm' you over the months ahead. We still have work to do but we are well on our way to achieving our $40 million goal. Thank you all for the resolve and the smiles.

Personally, while I love a cool 75 degree sunny day as much as the next, I have always learned much more from my endeavors in the rain. I doubt I am alone in this thought.

I hope to see you all at the Gala & Check presentation on November 8th where we will celebrate our 35 years of fundraising for Dana-Farber and building the PMC.

See you on the Road,

Billy
