PMC Night with the Celtics was a Slam Dunk!

On Sunday, Feb. 9, more than 400 Pan-Mass Challenge cyclists, volunteers, and supporters came together as the Boston Celtics paid tribute to the PMC for its incredible fundraising efforts on behalf of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund during the team’s inaugural PMC Night at the TD Garden.

Before the start of the game, 14 PMC Bedford Kid Rides participants, children who ride in one of 37 mini bike-a-thons to raise funds for the PMC, served as Boston Celtics anthem buddies, standing alongside players as the national anthem was performed.

During a special in-game presentation, PMC Founder Billy Starr received a standing ovation as he was presented with the Heroes Among Us Award. Established as an initiative of the Boston Celtics in 1997, the award identifies individuals who have made a positive impact on the lives of others within the community.

As the crowd looked on, a short video highlighting the PMC played on the JumboTron.

Ten PMC Pedal Partners being treated for cancer at Dana-Farber’s Jimmy Fund Clinic greeted players as they returned to the court for the second half of the game as part of the Halftime High Five Kids Tunnel.

At the end of the third quarter, the PMC and one lucky winner from the audience were the beneficiaries of the 50/50 raffle.

The celebration is part of a series of events leading up to the 35th annual PMC. On Aug. 2 and 3, more than 5,500 cyclists will ride up to 190 miles in the two-day fundraising event with the goal of raising $40 million for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund.

“Boston is a sports town and having the Boston Celtics behind the PMC enhances public awareness about the PMC and shows the universality of the PMC mission,” says PMC Founder and Executive Director Billy Starr. “The PMC is pleased to have all of Boston’s major professional sports organizations actively involved in our event and its mission.”

Although the Boston Celtics lost to the Dallas Mavericks with a final score of 102 to 91, PMC Night at the Boston Celtics was a slam dunk in the PMC’s notebook.
