Why I PMC guest blog by Heather Leff, 10-year Team Rockstar cycling participant

This is my 10th year as a rider or volunteer for PMC. The story of why I ride mimics those of many involved with PMC. When I was young, grandparents on my father’s side succumbed to cancer. In my 20s there was an Uncle and then there was a span where cancer spared us, and then it seemed to come at our family with a vengeance. My father, uncles, aunts, friends, some fought and won, some lost their battles. And then my brother-in-law, diagnosed at just 45 years old, at the top of his cross fit class, eating clean and seemingly in his prime. In seven short years Matt lost the battle with this senseless disease.

The silver lining? His illness sparked our family’s PMC journey. We have collectively raised over $100,000 we have parked cars, moved luggage, affixed signage, moved mattresses, picked up trash, mailed packages, and ridden several PMC routes. As of this year, a couple of my family members have interned at PMC! The money we raise fuels research for a cure for the cancer that took Matt’s life. Together we hope our efforts will help other families win their battles and ultimately human kind by finding a cure.
