William Mead's Ride

Why I Ride ...

On April 9th my girls and I celebrated what would have been Mariana’s 56th birthday, dining over her usual birthday favorite Thai dinner. It seems like just yesterday that she graced us with her memorable presence. In 2002 Eliza and Caroline were just 6 and 9; now they are grown young ladies at 15 and 18.

It will be 9 years ago this July that Mariana was last with us. I remember and honor each year by riding in the Pan Mass Challenge, a 2-day 168-mile bicycle ride from Wellesley to Bourne, then on to Provincetown, Massachusetts. The ride benefits the Jimmy Fund at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, with 100% of the donations supporting cancer research for children. Over 5,000 riders and 2,500 volunteers donate their time and muscles each year, raising $303 million over the past 30 years for the Jimmy Fund " a nearly unfathomable contribution.

August 6th and 7th this summer will mark my 10th year riding the PMC, a miracle given the numerous orthopedic procedures that have sculpted my aging limbs. This year we are poised to break the $100,000 mark in total contributions "imagine what an influence this has on cancer research! Last year was a record year for us, with donations totaling $16,010. Let’s do it again to celebrate a decade of fighting cancer.
