Team Pedal 2 The Mettle's Ride
Why I Ride ...
Mettle n.
1. Courage and fortitude; spirit:
2. Inherent quality of character and temperament
A play on the popular cliché, "Pedal to the Metal," meaning to give all one can to a task at hand, our team's name "Pedal 2 the Mettle," is intended to have a similar, yet deeper meaning. Mettle, meaning courage and fortitude, is the driving force behind our team's identity.
A pervasive trait among all PMC participants, our team exemplifies an inherent strength of character....one that shows that cancer must not create victims. Every rider and every volunteer has been impacted in some way by cancer, and our participation in this ride shows that cancer can and will be beaten!
In 2006, one of the team members received the news that eventually became the inspiration to fight back and participate in the PMC. While this was far from the only interactions we have had with cancer, this one made us realize that, while we are still invincible, we are not impervious. In 2009 Amie rode the full 192 miles of the PMC a mere one month after completing her last chemo treatment and shortly before starting her radiation, proving that nothing will stop us!
Now in our third year as a team we welcome back nine team-members from last year. We also grew this year, grew a lot, we are proud to welcome 8 new teammates! Here is a heartfelt welcome to our new teammates and first time riders Cody, Elizabeth (F.), Eric, Harry, Jesse, Karl and Katie. Another heartfelt welcome goes out to George, a returning 2005 PMC veteran. This year we are riding 17 strong!
Amie and Katie started as nurse/patient and became friends and teammates. Katie introduced us to Elizabeth, where they work together in the Mass General Hospital Chemotherapy infusion unit. They see the struggles of patients and benefits of well funded research and treatment on a daily basis, up close and very personal.
Together with more than 5,000 other riders, 2,500 volunteers and untold volumes of critical cheering support, all of us have committed to riding 200 miles, over two days, in any type of weather as well as to raising over $4,200, that is over $70,000 we will raise! Last year we were raised 56% more than our team minimum commitment, could we reach the $100K mark this year? We are committed to this ride because we know that with each mile biked and each dollar raised, we are getting closer to finding new, better and safer treatments. And, for your part, we want to thank each and every one of you for helping us to reach our emotional, financial and physical goals.
Thank you for visiting our site.
With love,
Team Pedal 2 the Mettle
