Robert Lupacchino's Ride
Why I Ride ...
This year, I joined "Brielle's Brigade" which is a cycling team that takes part in the Pan Mass Challenge (PMC). The team was founded three years ago by my neighbor, Ed Moses. Ed's commitment to this event is remarkable and his inspiration; well, it's quite contagious. His motivation to form the team came after his niece Brielle was diagnosed and treated for leukemia when she was just 6 years old.
The PMC is a non-profit organization founded about 30 years ago by Billy Starr. Over the years, the PMC has grown to become The Jimmy Fund's single largest contributor, raising millions of dollars every year to fund research for fighting cancer. In 2008, $35 million was raised by more than 5,000 cyclists and 100% went directly to The Jimmy Fund for cancer research at the world renowned Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, Massachusetts.
I don't know anyone who hasn't experienced a tragic loss of a family member or a close friend due to this dreaded disease. In some small way, joining the team has provided me with a means to personally fight back against this killer. This is my motivation to ride in the PMC. All the resources that I have personally committed to this fundraising effort pale in comparison to the hardships experienced by someone battling cancer.
I know the training will be difficult and time-consuming but when I get on my bike in Hillsdale, New York and make the 300-mile trek to Provincetown, Massachusetts, I'll have everyone with me. I'll be riding for all of our futures, our loved ones who are bravely fighting cancer today and all of those who have fought and lost the battle. Every pedal stroke, every mile and every drop of sweat will remind me that we must forge on in an effort to conquer cancer.
