Todd Yezefski's Ride

Why I Ride ...

During my junior year at Dartmouth College, I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. Things seemed to be leading toward biology grad school, but what would I study? Plants were too boring and structural biology too technical, and I knew that I wanted to study something in a medical related field.

Soon after, my longtime cycling mentor, coach, and friend Alaric Gayfer was diagnosed with state IV glioblastoma. His treatments were harsh and brutal, and even still they left him with little chance of survival. Seeing him suffer through this, I knew that I wanted to enter the field of cancer research to do my small part so that future cancer patients could see a brighter future.

And so I began my career at The University of Chicago in grad school. However, something was missing. I knew that my hours and hours of mostly failed experiments were producing some valid results that would contribute to the knowledge base in the medical world, but I really wanted to interact with the people whose lives were being most affected by this complicated disease. I also served on the organizing committee of an American Cancer Society fundraiser ride and was inspired by the many survivors and patients that I met while working on the ride and along the route. This just helped to solidify my decision to go to med school and (hopefully) become a practicing oncologist.

That's my story, and that's why I am so excited to have the opportunity to ride as part of Team Kermit with the Branfman's and all their friends and family in support of this great cause.

Please, help support the Jimmy Fund and the fight against cancer.
