Team Vanderbilt's Ride

Why I Ride ...

Hello to all our family, friends, colleagues and contributors! I'd like to take the opportunity to introduce you to “TEAM VANDERBILT” and what we're all about. Team Vanderbilt is a 21 person bicycling team that is taking part in this year's Pan Massachusetts Challenge (PMC) on August 6th and 7th. The PMC is New England's oldest and the nation's most successful bicycling fundraising event. Riders and their sponsors have contributed over $122 million to The Jimmy Fund of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute since the PMC was established in 1980. An estimated 4,000 bikers will be participating in this year's 26th Anniversary PMC with a goal of raising $21 million to fund the amazing work that takes place every day at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. We hope to contribute $75,000 towards that goal. This is our fourth year of riding in the PMC and have grown from our original team of 8 to the current team of 21. Our first two years were tremendous experiences and we have raised in excess of $190,000 thanks to you. We're looking forward to building upon the enthusiasm and success of last year's effort.

Team Vanderbilt is a 21 person team whose common connection point is a gym in Norwood where many of us take spinning classes (The Vanderbilt Club, hence our name). Spinning, in case you've never heard of it, is a workout class in which the participants get on specially designed stationary bikes and "spin" to music and the encouragement of instructors. We take simulated rides in which we ride long flats, climb steep hills (by turning up the tension on the 50 pound flywheel) and take off on explosive sprints. We are scattered throughout the metro Boston area from Foxboro to Norwell to Hingham to Billerica and are from all walks of life.

We are also pleased to once again ride in the PMC's Pedal Partner Program. We are riding for a new Pedal Partner this year, 7 year old Jane Fulshaw from Concord, MA. Jane is battling Leukemia. Our partner from 2002 and 2003 is still very much part of the Team Vanderbilt family. Molly Sullivan, now 7 years old, is free and clear of cancer and now leading a happy and carefree life. Molly and her parents, Kristin
