Timothy scanlon's Ride

Why I Ride ...

Dear Friends and Family,

On August 6th and 7th, I am participating in the Pan-Mass Challenge for the fifth year in a row. For those of you who dont know the PMC  it is a 180 mile charity bike ride across Massachusetts in support of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.  Last year the event raised over $30 million to search for cures for cancer and related diseases.

This year my personal ride is once again inspired by three amazing individuals - my dad, my sister, and my godson. My father, Gerald Scanlon, passed away three summers ago after a courageous 15 year battle with cancer. My sister Meg was in the prime of her life when ovarian cancer took her life at 21 years old.

Most importantly this year's ride is about supporting my Godson, Harry Clark,  who at age 11 continues to fight a brain tumor with the strenghth and courage of a true warrior. Harry's tumor has caused him to lose his vision in one eye and has left him with only partial vision in the other. Despite this major challenge you would never know of his disadvantage as he refuses to let this change his life. While he is no longer able to play baseball, he has chanelled his energies into a leadership role as the little league team manager. He has also been chosen to be the roadie for the elementary school rock band, Burnt Orange. His spirit is never broken and he continues to be a cheerleader for those around him. This coming week he is off to Paul Newman's Hole in the Wall Camp founded for children with cancer. Harry was chosen from applicants around the country and is thrilled to have his first sleep-away experience. He will no doubt be encouraging the other campers to tackle their fears during his time there. The road ahead will not be easy as he will face more procedures this fall and yet despite this uphill climb his day to day attitude is a lesson to us all in living each day to the fullest.

We will be riding on Team Pedals for Pediatrics which is made up of many of the doctors and nurses who helped Harry through his battle. We plan to carry Harry's,Meg's and dad's tenacious spirit and zest for life with us on the ride.

Thanks for your time and generosity.
Best,
Tim
