Tim Mulhern's Ride

Why I Ride ...

My father, Francis A. Mulhern, died of pancreatic cancer in November, 1986. He was diagnosed in late September, shortly after we learned that Susan was pregnant with our oldest child. At the time, I was very surprised to learn that there was really no hope for him. How, I wondered, with all of the medical advances I had heard of, could his doctor give up without a fight? A pathologist client finally explained that the symptoms for pancreatic cancer look benign and are often ignored or tolerated by the patient, that the disease hides behind a belly ache until it has progressed beyond hope. I was frustrated, then astonished and, when Art was gone, a little numb.

A few years later a friend suggested that I join him riding the Pan Mass Challenge. I rode for the first time in 1994. The route was lined, practically the whole way from Sturbridge to Provincetown, with cancer survivors and their families, grateful relatives who had seen the work done by the Dana Farber Cancer institute and other people who supported the cause.

Over the years the event has gotten larger, raised millions of dollars and the number of supporters along the way has increased steadily. Sadly, more of my clients and friends have been touched by cancer. Some have survived, but many have not. I hope by doing this to help reverse the trend a little.
