PMC 2010: Shining Luca's Light
The picture at the left is Noah sleeping through his first PMC in 2007. We're handing down the onesie to Lily this year.
Marking a decade (woo-hoo!) since I first joined that annual force of reckoning that is the Pan-Mass Challenge, I've accumulated a loooooong list of stories to inspire my ride.
This year I'm adding Luca De Lisi's story. Luca, whose name means "bringer of light," is the son of my friend Megan and her husband Jeffrey. Luca passed away in 2005 from a brain tumor called medullobastoma, the second-most common childhood cancer. I never met Luca, but I am told he was sweet and brave and wise beyond his years. He was known to hold up a hand, almost like he was shining a light right from the palm of his little hand. I look at my own three-year-old son Noah, I see his smile and a happy wave of his hand, and I can not imagine Luca's story as Noah's.
That is the beauty of the PMC. Every pedal pushed, every dollar donated lets us help shine Luca's light on the fight against cancer, working together to fund research that will change the future of pediatric cancer patients.
So this year I proudly ride as a member of TEAM LUCA, and I ask for your continued support in the hope that some day all of our PMC stories will have happy endings. My goal for 2010 is to raise $5000. Once again, 100% (an amount unrivaled by any other athletic fundraiser anywhere) will go directly to cancer research through The Jimmy Fund.
Whenever I tell someone about my PMC experience, they inevitably express some kind of "wow" about the ride. The bicycling, I tell you, is not the hard part. Anybody can practice a little and ride. The heart of the PMC is the donor - those of you who find the compassion to give $50 or $100 or more to our cause. You are what makes the PMC the extraordinary event that it is, and I thank you in advance for joining this effort. Please be sure to include the names of anyone in whose honor you'd like me to ride again this year.
THANK YOU!
