Scot Parnell's Ride
Why I Ride ...
I am riding with Team Brent.
Brent is 4 years old. He loves swimming, school and Spiderman. In September '04 Brent was diagnosed with stage IV neuroblastoma cancer. Since then, he has fought the good fight with:
· A dozen surgeries, removing four tumors and cancer in the bone marrow
· Endless time at Yale, Boston Children's/Dana Farber and doctor offices
· 6 rounds of chemo, 2 weeks of targeted radiation and a week of total body radiation; 2 stem cell transplants, hundreds of blood transfusions, daily maintenance to broviac site
· A year plus of isolation from other kids.
The treatment has worked so far… He was declared cancer free in September and again on 2/13/06. Neuroblastoma is brutal though; Brent still has a 50% chance of relapse with no cure. Most relapses occur within 18 months (12/06), almost all are within 3 years. We all hope he enters remission in 6/08.
The past two years, I joined 100 other men and women and shaved for our friend Brent to raise awareness. That was just a warm up. On August 5th and 6th I will join nearly 4,000 cyclists in the Pan-Mass Challenge. We will be bicycling 192 miles to raise money for child cancer research. This event raises more money than any other athletic fundraising event and is the most cost efficient with $.99 of each dollar going directly to medical care and research.
· The PMC has contributed more than $145 million to lifesaving cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute since 1980.
· All money raised by Team BrentWheels goes to and#8220;Friends for Life.and#8221; The Friends for Life have raised $1.7 million dollars so far to fight neuroblastoma. One of Brent's doctors was hired with the first million dollar fellowship for a half time research and half time clinical position until 2006.
· The money raised by Team BrentWheels alone will allow the hiring of another FT neuroblastoma researcher at Dana Farber
Please sponsor me and help Brent and other children fight the good fight.
