Stephanie Levin's Ride
Why I Ride ...
For my 13th year, I'm biking 200 miles across Massachusetts in the PMC. Please make a donation to show your support of my ride and help end the fight against cancer!
The training has become a ritual... With the arrival of warm weather, I pull on the pillow-butt spandex shorts, dust off the bike, and awaken my hibernating legs - to train. I drag myself out of bed at 7am on weekends and stay out biking 'til 9pm on weeknights - to train. I endure the modified "farmer's tan," neck pains, and leg cramps (don't get me started on the butt pain!) - to train. And my fear of a rainy forecast has me checking the weather on regular intervals (Wanna know the weather? Just call me for the week's forecast!). All to train for the PMC. And it's well worth it.
Why the PMC? Recruited by our cycling fathers, my cousin and I first volunteered for the PMC in 1992. After 6 years of volunteering, we wanted to be where the action was-on the road, in the summer sun (or wind and rain, as we later learned). Never mind that I hadn't pedaled since my days on a pink bike with a flowered basket and banana seat - if my father could haul his butt across the state on a bike, then so could I! But I never could have predicted the critical role that the PMC would play in my life... It's through the PMC community that I came to live in Boston, work in the past at Linkage and Genzyme, and meet many of my dearest friends. I'm dedicated to this particular event because of its personal influence on my life, as well as the inspirational contribution that the Dana-Farber makes towards cancer research and treatment.
The ride ain't easy - but the fund-raising is the real challenge. With the support of friends, family, and co-workers, I've raised over $74,000 for cancer research and treatment. Please support me this year - your contribution will help further much needed cancer research and treatment provided by the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
A cure for cancer is out there. Thanks to the PMC - and your support - we are getting "closer by the mile!"
