Susan Coccoluto's Ride
Why I Ride ...
Let’s Do It Again I never would have figured that I would be taking on a “once in a lifetime” event, again. I had a strong feeling that Fran would want to take on the PMC for a second time, it’s part of her competitive dna. She thrived like an all star during the 2 day, 150+ mile event last year. The training was a means to an end. When I look back, I’m not sure when I knew that I would say yes. I can think of the many times when I “knew” that I would say no, including when I was at the starting line by myself feeling over-whelmed, scared, nauseous, dizzy, anxious " and I didn’t see Fran because she was up ahead of me, already in her “race mode”. And I thought what the #@$% am I doing here? I think it was mile 12 before I saw her beaming smile and I had my reminder of why I was there. The training was arduous in many ways, not to mention the many rainy days, flat tires, falls, deer and turkey crossing our paths, fund raising, or the long training rides when we just wanted to be done. Who would want to go through this again? Fran first asked me right after last year’s event. I didn’t want us to get caught up in the “high” that we were feeling so I shrugged it off. Months later she asked me again while we were at a party presenting the $30,000,000 check to Dana-Farber and the Jimmy Fund. How impressive was that? I was ready to say yes, but I wanted to be sure that she truly wanted to do it again, so I bought some more time. The clock was ticking since sign-ups for PMC Alumni were coming up in January and if we didn’t want to share a tent again, we needed to be quick. She convinced me that she truly wanted to do it again, so here we are. In true Fran spirit, she wants to take on more challenges, so we are taking the longer two day ride to Provincetown, and have made our reservations to be on the Party Boat from P-Town to Boston. It says it all. Fran and I will be riding for all those that have been touched by cancer. Events like the PMC truly make lifetime memories happen. The combination of the funds and the commitment of the riders, volunteers, and the truly dedicated medical staff at Dana Farber have made many of our prayers and wishes come true. We all know that we still have a long way to go to rid us of the ugliness that cancer has set upon those we cherish. In the words of the Black Eyed Peas, Let’s Do It Again …………………..
