Seamus Brown's Ride

Why I Ride ...

This will be my fifth year riding the PMC with TeamBrentWheels and its getting to the point where I can't imagine my summer without it. Actually, I can't imagine my winter and spring without it either. To those that ride, the event starts in January with registration. I imagine for many there is a bit of nervous apprehension in the dark, frigid days of January trying to decide whether or not they have the 192 miles in their legs and the gumption to ask their friends and family to donate yet again for an abstract charity ride. That apprehension lasts about twenty seconds before thoughts of the camaraderie of the event return and one begins to think about the children (and families) for whom we ride. Starting training in March, with snow lining the roads, the whole exercise seems a bit absurd until you remember the children who are in the first stages of cancer diagnosis at Dana Farber. By the time you reach 192 miles at the end of the two day ride, you can't imagine doing anything else with a spare weekend in August. The ride is about doing good - plain and simple - and in the midst of our crazy lives with plenty of distractions, there is something very rewarding about knowing you are making a difference - reducing a family's suffering and improving the odds that a kid with a death sentence might have the opportunity to ride the PMC on her own in ten or fifteen years. I can't thank you enough for your donation.

TeamBrentWheels was launched mid 2005 with 9 riders and raised an amazing $135k to fight neuroblastoma at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. From that modest team, BrentWheels has grown to over fifty riders strong and has raised $1.9 million dollars in donations from people like you. TeamBrent has partnered with Dr. Lisa Diller to open a much needed targeted MIBG/radiotherapy program at DFCH. Past monies raised funded one of Brent's doctor's salaries (50% clinical/50% research).

The Pan-Mass Challenge is the premier charity cycle ride in the US, with over $200 million donated to cancer research since its inception and a truly amazing 100% donation pass-through rate direct to research. Nothing makes it easier for me to ask for your hard earned charitable donation than knowing 100% of it will go to Dana Farber.

Cancer is something that has touched nearly everyone I know in a meaningful way - be it an uncle who lost his fight at too young an age, a grandparent suffering through treatment, or most tragically in the case of Brent and the McCreesh family, affecting our children. As our society's quality of life continues to improve and lifespans lengthen, cancer will become an even more widespread phenomena. Please donate in support of the PMC and the amazing work that Dana Farber provides our community. I personally can't think of any better cause.
