Dear
Hello, I hope that all is well! I would like to start by thanking those who helped raise money for cancer research in the past. And also thanks in advance to those who are going to help this year. I will be riding in my 3rd Pan Mass Challenge (PMC). I have come to believe this is a very important mission. The PMC is a 192 mile bike ride from Sturbridge to Provincetown on the weekend of August 5th and 6th. We ride 110 miles on Saturday and then spend the night at Mass Maritime. The next morning we ride across the Bourne Bridge as the sun rises and proceed to ride the length of Cape Code. It is one of the most incredible experiences that I have ever been a part of â€" the camaraderie, the ride, the food, and the roadside fans.. It is all great but it is only the icing on the cake.
By raising money for cancer research we are hoping to make a change. I want to share some facts with you that I discovered while reading about cancer - 560,000 people in this country will die from cancer this year; 1.5 million new cases of cancer will be diagnosed this year, and almost half the people alive today will have cancer in their lifetime. Cancer is an epidemic but there is hope. In 2003 there were 369 fewer cancer deaths than the previous year â€" the first decrease in 70 years. The money that we are raising is making a difference. Ninety-nine % of the monies that we raise go directly to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI)/ Jimmy Fund. DFCI funds cutting-edge molecular cell research to learn about the earliest stages of cancer growth. It funds a special mammography van that last year performed 3200 mammograms to mostly low income women. There is no prevention for breast cancer, only early detection. I'm sure that this van has been a life-saver for many woman. This money also funds the Lenny Zakim Integrated Treatment Center that provides complimentary massages and acupuncture and other benefits to ease the discomfort of cancer patients. Dr. Charles Fuchs is leading a study of colon cancer funded with this money. Also funded are many programs related to prevention including PET scanners that reveal tumors in advance, plus much more.
Sometimes when I watch I feel helpless that there is nothing that I can do. But there is something that we can do â€" we can fight back. Researches are learning more and more every day and we are all making a difference. A Cure = Research = Money!! This is what it comes down to. I am dedicated to this fight but I cannot do it alone. I need your financial support. I am committed to raising $3300 but my personal goal is to raise over $4000. When I ride I am not alone. I am with friends and family that we have lost and also the survivors who have physical and emotional scars.
Please consider making a donation by sending a check made out to the Pan Mass Challenge to the address above or go online to http://www.pmc.org/ and make a donation using my PMC ID # RR0065. You can also watch the ride on NECN on August 4th - 6th.
Thanks in advance for your help,
