Why I Ride ...

August 2011

Hello Friends:

Many of you know- I will be riding in my 9th Pan-Mass Challenge. 168 mile bike ride across Massachusetts to raise money for cancer research.  I have logged approximately 650 miles this year despite 9 months of foot/ankle challenges and I am thankful be in motion.

5,200 riders will be cycling their way from Boston to Cape Cod in this year 2011 PMC.  I belong to Team Perry who in total consists of 74 riders.  This year Team Perry received some extra press and was featured on a Boston based news program called Chronicle.  Please take a moment to watch the piece â€" they did a really nice job of capturing the story and our cause to help eliminate cancer through the direct funding of researchers.

Many of you already know the personal reason behind my passion for the PMC.  I became associated with the PMC when my mother Rita C. Medeiros was diagnosed with colon cancer. The PMC allowed my family to join together to help my mother in her battle against this horrible disease.   Both my mother and father volunteered for several PMC weekends.  My mother focused her strength handing out sandwiches to the cyclists even while undergoing chemotherapy and not feeling well.  My mother believed she owed it to herself and other people to help fight cancer and raise money for research.

My mother succumbed to colon cancer in 2005 after battling the disease for close to four years.  If she had she been diagnosed 5 years later, the new cancer treatments on the market could have saved her life.  When she was diagnosed only 1 cancer treatment was available and by the time she died 4 more treatments had come to market.  This surge in new treatments is the direct result of Cancer Research.

In 2010- My Dad Joseph Medeiros was diagnosed with colon cancer and underwent surgery at Dana Farber.  He was operated on by the very surgeon that Team Perry helps to fund.  Just 4 days ago my Dad had his 1 year scan which is a bench mark test and the doctors gave him a clean bill of health.  My dad is an example that cancer research is literally LIFE SAVING!

The PMC is truly a great event because of its fund-raising accomplishments. Since its inception in 1980, the PMC has donated an astounding $214 million dollars to the Jimmy Fund, the largest fund-raising arm of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

I hope you consider making a small donation after watching the video. Team Perry's 2011 goal is to raise $480,000 and we are committed to succeed.  To date Team Perry has raised over 3 million dollar and have funded 9 Doctors specifically dedicated to cancer research.
