Ronda Matson's Ride

Why I Ride ...

I first rode the PMC in 1997. The loss of my dear grandmother, Catherine, had left me feeling helpless against this terrible disease. I was co-chair for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life in Franklin, MA at the time and the loss of one of my committee members to cancer only increased my anger. Even though I felt that I was helping through the Relay, I needed to do more. Janet died at the age of 33 and left 3 young sons. The PMC is a way for me to raise money in the fight against cancer and-- mile by mile-- to feel as though I am personally assaulting it. We lost our friend, Norman, to pancreatic cancer. I think of him with every circle of the pedal. I think about our friend, Pat, who has survived and lives strong after two battles. And so, as much as I ride with the weight of loss, there is the joy of life. I have travelled the route from Sturbridge to Provincetown 6 times. This year, I will ride from Wellesley to Bourne for the second time. No doubt, when I reach Bourne, I'll want to ride that second day. Some would call me strange, but I miss it! Pedal by pedal, I know we make a difference. Peace!
