Ralph Baird's Ride
Why I Ride ...
Welcome to my PMC Profile page. I'm riding in my second Pan-Mass Challenge this year.
I'm proud to be a part of this outstanding community of riders and supporters. They've made a tremendous contribution to The Jimmy Fund and Dana Farber Cancer Institute in their ongoing fight against cancer over the past 20 years.
Like many riders, I have a personal reason to participate in this fund-raising event. I'm making the 192-mile trek across Massachusetts on August 1-2 in memory of my nephew, Luca. I'll be thinking of him throughout the race.
In early 2005, doctors discovered Luca had a brain tumor known as medulloblastoma. They moved quickly to remove it, but it came back. They treated it with chemotherapy, but it persisted. They attempted radiation, but it wouldn't surrender.
Luca fought hard and bravely, but lost his personal battle with brain cancer just six months later at the tender age of three. While his time with us was short, I have many lasting memories of our time together.
I'll never forget what he went through. No one should go through that, especially not a child. As the father of three, I know there's nothing more precious than children. And while progress is made every year, Luca's story and others like it are a big reminder that the fight against this deadly disease-- especially pediatric brain tumors-- is far from over.
So, I'm ready to saddle up alongside Luca's dad (my brother-in-law) and the rest of Team Luca again this year to ride across Massachusetts and raise more money for life-saving cancer research and treatment.
I'm sure you know someone who has fought cancer and would like to do something to help defeat it. The Pan-Mass Challenge is an outstanding event, and I hope you will consider sponsoring me in this worthy cause.
I know these aren't the best of economic times, but Team Luca and I would really appreciate any support you'd be willing to offer. Last year, our team raised more than $90,000. Together, we really can make a difference.
Donations can be made any time between now and the end of September. The easiest way to donate is to make an e-Gift (see Donate to My Ride button below). You can also donate by check, if you'd like. Please feel free to contact me directly for additional details. Thank you.
