Peter Thorne's Ride
Why I Ride ...
I'm a proud supporter of the PMC because it is leading a charge
to beat cancer. In fact, last year 100% of rider-raised revenue went
directly to support the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's
tireless commitment to finding a cure. I ride on the Pedaling for Pediatric Team. T
he
“Pedal for Pediatrics” Team raised over $250,000. This amount went directly to pediatric causes
within Dana Farber. The dollars were divided between the pragmatic,
humanitarian, and esoteric causes. For instance, they set aside a large sum to
offer to parents of dying children who must chose between work, to pay the rent
or the mortgage, and being at the bedside. They routinely offer to cover a
monthly payment or two, so that families can be together when time is limited. They
also used the funds to inaugurate the DFCI’s new program in Global Pediatric
Oncology. They are planning to set up 2-3 DFCI sponsored programs for children
with cancer in low income countries, likely in South American and Africa. Funds
from the PMC were used to investigate sites in Ethiopia, Rwanda, Costa Rica,
and the Dominican Republic. And they set up a program to enhance options for
future fertility of children being treated with cancer. New approaches to sperm
and egg preservation mean that parents of children with cancer may not have to
ask in the future “will my child be able to have a child of his/her own?” A
wide range of new ventures are leveraged from the PMC.
