Paul Savage's Ride
Why I Ride ...
Dear Friends,
As the House and Senate debated
ideology under the guise of health care, there is no debate on cancer. It still
sucks.
This year, I will continue my
efforts to help search for a cure. As in the past three years, I and my
teammates will cross Massachusetts--from Sturbridge to Provincetown--"to raise funds
for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
DFCI is one of the few charities
where every cent raised goes directly to fund cancer research. Funds I raise
have helped build the lab of cancer-killer Dr. George Demetri. Dr. Demetri and the
DFCI team have found a successful treatment for a form of stomach cancer called
Gastro Intestinal Stromal Tumor (GIST) by helping develop a drug called
Gleevec. Dr. Demetri rides on our team.
Gleevec saved the life of my
teammate Paul Schaye, the founder of our team. Paul, who had been an avid
fundraiser for DFCI for a decade, suffered from 15 tumors. He rode the 200-mile
ride less than a year following diagnosis and surgery.
I train all year for this event
and I find the ride tough. Imagine how tough it would be to ride following
surgery, chemo, or radiation. Imagine the mental toll on loved ones, caretakers
of those who lost the battle.
As in past rides, I pedal in memory of
Joel Feldstein, Bart Murtaugh and Dick Diamond.
All were fighters and I know would cheer me on today. Know that your
gift IS curing cancer. Paul Schaye is living proof.
