Patricia Leavenworth's Ride
Why I Ride ...
In February of 2006, the unthinkable happened. I lost my Mother to pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer is one of the most deadliest forms of cancer. There is no cure. Once diagnosed, it is virtually a death sentence. My Mother, knowing she had only months to live, found the courage to live, laugh, comfort her family and friends, and fight to make the most of every day she had.
I am riding in the PMC for the fourth year for three reasons. The first, obviously, is for my mother. To show her that she means so much to me that I will never give up the fight to find a cure for pancreatic cancer. The second reason, is I realized that although there is no cure for her particular form of cancer, cancer research so far has resulted in many types of palliative treatments. These palliative (comforting) treatments helped my mother make the most of every day by helping her feel better. Many of the chemo treatments she received had only recently been approved and there are more on the horizon. Funding cancer research has resulted not only in new treatments, but also some wonderful new medicines that help with anything from nauseau to keeping a patients blood count up so he/she can receive their next treatment. I realized how important funding is in keeping the reasearch going so that some day there will be a cure. The last reason, is that Senator Bob Antonioni rode in the PMC that very first year after my mom passed away in memory of her. My family was very honored. I thought, if he can do this for her and others like her, then so can I.
