Paul Halayko's Ride
Why I Ride ...
Family and Friends,
This summer, on August 1st and 2nd, I will be participating in my second Pan-Mass Challenge.
Founded in 1980, The Pan Mass Challenge (PMC) is the nation's original fundraising bike-a-thon and today raises more money than any other athletic fundraising event in the country. The race takes place over two days, and spans 192 miles. In 2008, the PMC donated 100% of every rider-raised dollar directly to cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through its Jimmy Fund. The PMC generates nearly 50% of the Jimmy Fund's annual revenue and is its single largest contributor. Last year, 5,232 PMC cyclists raised and contributed $35 million to the Jimmy Fund, bringing its 29-year contribution to more than $239 million. The PMC is the most successful athletic fundraising event in the country. The cyclists' 2009 goal is to raise $30 million!
My experience last year as a first-time rider was so incredible, I was eager to participate again. Once again, I will be riding as part of two different teams: Team Xaverian, an all-boys Catholic high school in Massachusetts; and Team Deloitte. All funds raised by Team Xaverian will go directly to Dr. Christopher Turner, a researcher at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and a 1985 graduate of Xaverian Brothers High School. All funds raised by Team Deloitte will go directly to the Jimmy Fund.
My personal fundraising commitment this year is $3,400; which is by no means a small task, and the reason I am asking for your help. In these tough economic times, it is more important than ever to remember our responsibility to help others and support important charitable causes like the PMC. As JFK so aptly put it: "We do these things not because they are easy, but because they are hard."
You can donate by either mailing me a check made out the "Pan Mass
Challenge" or by using a credit card online. Simply log on to http://www.pmc.org/mypmc/profiles.asp?eGiftID=PH0092 and donate in the "Make an eGift" section (if needed, my e-gift ID is # PH0092) .
Many companies also have matching donations programs that may be an option for you too. Please consider a gift of $25, $50, $100 or even more and know that any donation will be greatly appreciated!
Remember that all donations to the PMC are tax deductible.
In closing, I take this challenge very seriously and more than ever I want to be part of the effort to search for a solution. You'd be hard-pressed to find a more worthy organization than the PMC. In 2008, 100 percent of all funds raised by PMC riders went directly to the Jimmy Fund.
I truly believe somewhere along the road between Sturbridge and Provincetown lies a cure for cancer. You can help us find it.
Thank you very much for all your support.
