Michael Sardo's Ride

Why I Ride ...

I'm riding for the third year, in honor of Luca DeLisi, my friend's Jeff and Megan's 3 year old son. The photo you see in my bio is myself and Luca, hiking in VT. Memory is definitely not one of my assets (I'm that person who asks your name and within seconds forget what you said) however, I remember every minute of that hike in VT with Luca on my back. Once during the hike he fell asleep in the pack and all I could hear was the sound of him breathing. I remember thinking it was such a peaceful sound. As of June 29, 2005, the only time I and everyone who loved him will ever hear that sound is in our dreams.
On January 4, 2005, Luca was diagnosed with stage 3 medulloblastoma cancer, a type of pediatric brain tumor that metastasized through his brain and spine. Throughout his fight with cancer, Luca endured numerous seizures, MRIs, surgeries, rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, partial paralysis....a heartbreaking battle no one, especially the most special 3 year old should ever have to fight. Throughout this ordeal, Luca was incredibly strong, confident, courageous and inspiring. He never lost his loving personality. He touched the lives of everyone he came in contact with - even people that didn't know him and just heard his story. After a 6-month fight, Luca lost his battle with this disease.
I've learned more from this 3 year old than I could ever put into words. Knowing Luca and watching Megan and Jeff cope with this tragedy has opened my eyes to what the words "courage" and "strength" really mean. The DeLisi's taught me how to fight no matter what the odds or outcome may be. All three possess unmatchable strength that is truly inspirational. I'm honored to to ride in Luca's name. It is my chance to give something back to the 3 people that taught me so much. I wish Luca could be there to cheer me and the team on. Although he can't be there in person, I know I'll hear his voice and see his face every minute of the ride. Luca, I will never forget you. Thank you for the constant smiles you brought to my face whenever I was in your presence.
If you are affected by Luca's story and feel you would like to help the Dana Farber institute find a cure. Please consider making a donation so Lucas death continues to have profound meaning.
