Kevin Fitzpatrick's Ride
Why I Ride ...
In 1993 I was sitting outside my house in Franklin as a constant stream of cyclists came rushing past my house. Being somewhat of a avid cyclist at the time I had to know what this group was doing on this hot August day. Curiosity turned into a yearly adventure for me. Cancer has touched my family greatly with the loss of my mother in 1988 to bladder cancer and my father in 1994 to lung cancer and in 2007 I lost my sister Mary to liver cancer. I will never forget the helpless feelings I had visiting my parents and sister on those last days of their struggle with this horrible disease. I also will never forget the wonderful doctors and nurses who cared for them. In the past few years I have also had close friends diagnosed with cancer, my girlfriends father Donny with prostate cancer and her Aunt Ann with breast cancer, both are doing well. Annie has held a back yard barbecue the past 3 years for my PMC ride each year surpassing the other with funds raised. I am truly blessed to have Ann and her husband Jack in my life.
Every year since 1994 I have looked forward to the date in January when I can register for the PMC. I look forward to that first weekend in August , some years more than others depending on my training . I have made some wonderful friends over the years riding the PMC, none better than my buddy Tim Brightman who lost his brother Steve to this disease.
I am not a scientist, doctor, nurse or any of the other professionals dedicated to finding the cure for cancer. All I can do is ride a bike and write letters to family and friends asking them to donate to the PMC, the greatest fund raiser in the world!
Maybe my last ride in the PMC is getting closer by the mile!.....
