Kathleen Coullard's Ride

Why I Ride ...

As friends and family know, my toughest challenge regarding cancer came when my Mom was diagnosed with two primary cancers in Nov 2005.  She was faced with metastatic breast and lung cancer with mets to the brain.  She began treatment with weeks of radiation and then chemo.  The radiation tired her and the chemo was tough on her.  A little over two months after her diagnosis we learned the cancer had spread to her bones and spinal fluid.  She lost her battle on February 6, 2006.

My Mother taught me to be a kind, caring, and compassionate person.  In today’s world, that is such a valuable lesson.  Always offer to help others in need or who may need a shoulder to lean on.  She taught me that life is not easy and that at times you may be on a difficult path.  You can only do what you can do and you just have to do your best to cope.  Always be thankful for what you have.  It will make you a better person.

Last year I started cycling and rode my first PMC.  To say it was the highlight of my year is an understatement.  I was part of an incredible team of riders who welcomed me and put up with all my questions of a newbie rider!  The ride itself was really inspirational.  From Wellesley to Bourne we were welcomed along the route by so many supporters.  It is amazing how a sign being held by a child or adult that says, "I am here because of you" can energize you when you don't think your legs can pedal anymore.

I am riding my second Pan Mass Challenge this year in memory of those who have lost their battle and as my way to make a difference in the lives of those who are fighting cancer.  I cannot change what happened to my Mom, but I can help to change the lives of those battling this horrible disease now.  I am again riding with Team LEGS (Legs Ending Great Suffering) and am honored to ride for our Pedal Partner Thomas.  100% of your donation towards my ride is restricted to support Dr. Wolfram Goessling's pediatric based oncology research.  You can learn more about it here:  http://fishing4stemcells.org.

Please join me in my fight!
