Why I Ride ...

Dear Friends and Family,

It is hard to believe that in five short weeks we will be riding the Pan Mass Challenge (PMC) again.  Despite it being the coolest and wettest June ever in the Boston area, we have already logged nearly 1,000 miles on our bikes as we prepare to ride from Wellesley to Provincetown, MA. Once again, we are riding in honor of Harry and all other kids affected by cancer. We are asking you to support our PMC bike ride and team, Pedals for Pediatrics, www.pedalsforpediatrics.org.

So much has changed from a year ago. First of all, Harry is doing great. He has remained stable for one year. We are forever grateful to our family, friends and the doctors at Dana Farber and Children's Hospital who have supported Harry and all of us every single step of the way. Thank you!

We also know the past year has been very tough on everyone economically. Unfortunately, though, even in the toughest of economic times, children and adults continue to be diagnosed with cancer. Indeed, it is in such times that organizations such as Children's Hospital and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute need financial support more than ever to continue their efforts to help families and fund vital research.  For this reason we are even more determined to ride the PMC this year.

As many of you know, every dollar we raise directly funds a variety of key programs that support children who are fighting cancer and their families. A quick look at this powerful 9-minute video will show you the impact those dollars have had: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dj1h3NRzKeg.

Last year, the Pedals for Pediatrics team raised an impressive $277,000. These dollars funded key programs and cancer research initiatives including:

The pediatric brain tumor bank to further brain tumor research
A resource room for patients and their families that offers respite from treatment
Mortgage assistance to families who cannot meet their financial obligations while caring for a sick child
A bereavement coordinator to support families when a child passes away
A hospital-to-home program that enables nurses to visit families as they transition home and help them ease their anxiety
Laptop computers to provide entertainment and help patients stay in touch with friends and loved ones
The International Nursing Fund which funded five nurses to travel to Africa last summer to provide training and care to pediatric cancer patients in Tanzania

Since Harry's diagnosis, we have been asked if it’s possible to recover from learning your child has a life threatening disease. The answer is "no." But we have learned you have a choice.  You can keep asking "why us?" or you can do something about it.  On August 1st and 2nd, we will be doing something about it as we ride the PMC.

We sincerely hope you'll help us make a difference by donating toward our ride. To do so, please make an online gift at www.pmc.org/egifts and use the egift number EG0070 for donations to Eunice's account and KC0177 for donations to Kevin's account. Alternatively, you may send a check payable to the PMC to Eunice Groark and Kevin Clark at 29 Poplar Road, Wellesely, MA 02482.  Also, on each of our PMC donation pages, you'll find some wonderful updated photos of Harry!

We appreciate your consideration and thank you for your support of our ride and, most importantly, of Harry.

With deepest gratitude,

Kevin and Eunice
