Julie Tarbox's Ride
Why I Ride ...
I have decided for a second time to participate in the PMC. This ride has special meaning for me due to my work as a nurse in the Oncology/Bone Marrow Transplant program at Boston Children's Hospital. It is difficult and rewarding work, it is one of the most interesting and impacting experiences of my life. I chose to embark on this incredible odyssey, PMC, to honor the children with whom I work. Their resiliance and determination are ever inspiring, and I reflect on it whenever I am struggling on my bicycle.
It was over a year ago that I met Jared, a young man with a brain tumor who was new to my unit. We hit it off immediately as we shared an interest in cycling. I became one of his regular nurses and worked with him during all my shifts. One night he asked if I would ride with his family in the PMC, I was so flattered and of course said yes. I quickly bought myself a bike, my first true road bike, and proceeded to fall in love with cycling. Jared became my mentor and cheerleader as I began to learn how train for high mileage and build my strength. He was my patient and then he and his family became my friends.
That was over a year ago, and yet somehow it seems longer. Jared died last fall, about 2 months after PMC. His loss makes my determination even stronger to continue with my cycling and to participate in this special fundraiser. I will ride once again with Jared's family, to honor him and to riase money in his name for brain tumor research at Dana Farber Cancer institute.
I ask you, my friends and family, for you encouragement and support during my ride and for a generaous donation to support Dana Farber as we raise money that will help further innovative research, promote new treatment protocols, and fund the operation of the Jimmy Fund clinic.
