Why I Ride ...

January 2011:
 
"For Charlotte."  Such was the battle cry of Team Lick Cancer in 2010.  But, sadly over the past year, Charlotte lost her brave battle, as did my dear Uncles, Stan and Dick.  Words simply cannot express the pain of these losses at this time.   While it is true that Dick and Stan "had a good run" as Stan would say so often, it still leaves the rest of us to mourn their loss.  As for Charlotte, it is simply heartbreaking to think that someone so young should have to suffer so badly over the course of several years.   Charlotte O'Shea was our Pedal Partner last year, but she never had the opportunity to live the wonderful life that she so deserved.   Only 6 years old, she battled cancer with a smile, day after day.  She was such an inspiration, and she continues to inspire.   With the generosity of so many and the power of the PanMass Challenge, we hope to someday give the Charlottes of the world a fighting chance to live the long and fruitful lives that so many of us take for granted.
 
 I began to ride in this wonderful event several years ago after losing my Mother quite suddenly to inflammatory breast cancer.  And although we get closer and closer to beating back this terrible disease, we still have a long way to go.  Thanks to the PMC and its amazing contribution to Cancer Research, we truly are getting "Closer by the Mile."
