Jaime Schier's Ride
Why I Ride ...
I got involved in the Pan Mass Challenge 6 years ago, after the death of a friend who fought a long battle with cancer. His passing brought home to me the immediacy of this epidemic: not only was he taken from us too early, but his family was decimated by the experience. At first, I rode to try to honor his memory, since I couldn't do anything to make his wife & kids feel better, and felt that anything I said would only make it worse. Never felt so weak in my life.
During my first PMC weekend I met a guy who had lost a brother to cancer. During a late-night (possibly buzzed) conversation he told me that he had ridden in the past in honor of his brother's memory, but had come recently to ride for all the people who (in the future) will never have to fight cancer. To say that it was a revelatory thought for me would be an understatement. Today I ride in part to honor my friend, whose friendship I wish I would have made more of when I had the chance: but mostly and more importantly, I'm motivated by all the people who will never have to be sick or hurt as a result of cancer.
Thanks for your help (more than I can say).
