John Rizzi's Ride
Why I Ride ...
Welcome to my page here on the PMC web site. Your interest must mean you care about finding a cure for cancer, and I hope it means you're here to support my ride.
This will be my eighth year riding in the PMC and I'm very excited to be doing it again. In fact I can't imagine not doing it as I have learned firsthand what an amazing event the PMC is and the power of the huge contribution it has made and continues to make in the fight against cancer. Just take a look around this web site and you will be amazed and, I hope, inspired.
My inspiration initially began in honor of my father who was lost to cancer in 2001. This year my inspiration was greatly multiplied, however, when I received my own diagnosis of cancer - melanoma - in January. This led to three stressful and difficult weeks which included deep surgery to remove all traces of the tumor, and test my lymph nodes. In the end my biopsies came back clean; a huge relief! Nonetheless it was quite a scare, and as with any cancer the chance of recurrence is now higher. Historically melanoma in later stages has been extremely difficult to fight. I'm thrilled to say that very recent research has produced remarkable breakthroughs, now in advanced trials, that look very promising for maybe half of melanoma cases. This fact, which hits so close to home, now brings so much more reality to my years of riding and fundraising to fund cancer research. It works!
