Joe Parrish's Ride

Why I Ride ...

As many of you know, last August I rode 163 miles from Wellesley, MA (a western suburb of Boston) to Provincetown, MA (the far end of Cape Cod) as part of the Pan-Mass Challenge to raise money for cancer research. I was truly inspired by the stories of the people associated with the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund, and so I've decided to ride the PMC again this year.   This year, I'm riding the "long" route from Sturbridge to Provincetown, covering 109 miles the first day and 79 miles the second day.

This is not just any bike ride. Now in its 30th year, the Pan-Mass Challenge started as the nation's first fundraising bike-a-thon and today raises more money than any other athletic fundraising event in the country. The proceeds from the PMC are donated to the Jimmy Fund, which supports cancer research and care at Boston's world-renowned Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The 5,500 cyclists riding the PMC this year will raise over $34 million. The PMC is responsible for generating almost 50 percent of the Jimmy Fund's annual revenue, and the PMC gives 100% of its proceeds to its designated charity -- an incredible mark of efficiency.

Your contribution will help to accelerate the effort toward better treatments and, ultimately, a cure for cancer. I've included a few links at the bottom to provide more information on the PMC, the Jimmy Fund, and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

This year I have set my fundraising goal at $5,000. Your gift is, of course, fully tax-deductible. If you wish to make a contribution, I can take cash or a check made out to the Pan-Mass Challenge. The fastest and easiest way to donate is online. (Click below on "Donate to My Ride")

I understand that many of you are active supporters of other charitable causes. As you are probably aware, cancer is the second leading cause of death in the US (behind only heart disease), and it strikes children and adults with equal tenacity. Cancer touches almost everyone. Thank you for any contribution you might choose to make toward this important cause.

This year, I'm riding for Antonio Abad, "Coach" Besley, Eryn Creedon, Richard Fanning, Patty Fecundio, Luis Maria Gomez, Cristina Larrinaga, William Oliver, James Paduano, Agi Parrish, and Gene Woolpert. During this year's ride, all of the Team Avanti members will carry with them messages contributed by friends, family, and colleagues about people in their lives who have been touched by cancer. I'd like to carry your message with me, so please send it to me by email or snail mail.
