John Leary's Ride
Why I Ride ...
First I want to thank everyone for supporting my PMC rides for a cure for cancer. Last year’s Pan Mass Challenge was a huge success raising 33 million dollars for Dana Faber Cancer Institute. I had a great ride last year and I am looking forward to this year’s 192-mile ride on August 6th and 7th. I started riding the PMC back in 2004 it was going to be
a onetime thing, but here it is now 2011 and I’m riding my 6th PMC. Every year we ride for a child that is battling this terrible disease which can bring great joy as we see them winning their battle with cancer, it can also bring great sadness if they lose this battle..
The Pan"Massachusetts Challenge (PMC), is the nation's original fundraising bike"a"thon and today raises more money than any other athletic fundraising event in the country. The PMC is a model of efficiency for all nonprofit organizations. Last year, the PMC donated 100% of every rider"raised dollar directly to cancer research and treatment at Dana"Farber Cancer Institute through its Jimmy Fund. The PMC generates nearly 50 percent of the Jimmy Fund's annual revenue and is its single largest contributor.
Cancer doesn't discriminate. We have all been touched by cancer in some way in our lives, and have witnessed family and friend’s courageous battles with cancer. It seems that every year more and more people that I know have had some form of cancer. The good news is that thru the efforts of places like Dana Faber more and more people are surviving this dreaded disease, but much more needs to be done to find a cure. This is why I am riding this amazing ride again and asking for you financial support to help achieve this goal.
Each time that I ride the PMC I am amazed at some of the things I see, the hundreds of cancer survivors that line the route to cheer us on. The children who were being treated at Dana Faber who come to thank us for riding at the lunch stop with smiles on their faces, the cyclist who rode the complete route with just one leg, he had lost his other leg to cancer. Jack who will be 16 this year who has been greeting the riders in Brewster since he turned five and thanking them with his sign that says I'm 16 now thanks to you
Every year the list of who I am riding for seems to grow larger this year’s ride is dedicated
in memory of Dave Morgan who lost his battle with cancer on March 3rd 2011. I will also be riding in memory my mother and father, but also in the memory all those who lost their fight with cancer. Mary McInerney, Bonita Delgardo, Jake Boudreau and many more.
If you will support my fund-raising goal, please send your tax deductible check made payable to PMC/Jimmy Fund to my address prior to August 31st.
