Jeffrey Kaplan's Ride
Why I Ride ...
I've been a supporter of the Pan Mass Challenge (PMC) for many years, making pledges on behalf of my friends who were riding in support of this great cause. Now, I'm proud to be a seasoned rider as well with three years under my belt or maybe I should say under my saddle.
Although my family has been touched by cancer with my Dad experiencing skin and thyroid cancer, it wasn't until a close friend discovered she had breast cancer four years ago that I decided it was time for me to participate in the PMC as a rider. She was the most recent case of a friend or family member afflicted with this dreaded disease, and inspired me to join my friends and make to train and raise money to earn the right to ride 163 miles from Wellesley to Provincetown.
The picture you see is of me after the first day of this extraordinary two-day event, exhilarated and proud to be a part of the incredible PMC experience.
Even more important than being able to meet the physical challenge of the event, I am especially gratified by the overwhelming number of people who have supported my ride over the past three years with their generous contributions to the Dana Farber Institute and Jimmy Fund.
Two years ago, I met another PMC rider, Steven Branfman, who lost his 23 year old son to cancer in 2005. Branfman is also a thyroid cancer survivor. As a tribute to his son, Steven formed Team Kermit, a group of riders who are raising funds for the Jared Branfman Sunflowers For Life Fund For Pediatric Brain And Spinal Cancer Research at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
I am now a part of Team Kermit and ride with a Kermit doll on my helmet because, in addition to the great cause, seeing the excitement on the faces of kids and adults as we ride by makes the PMC experience even more special.
Please help me attain my fundraising goal for this year's ride by contributing whatever you can afford to this terrific cause to fight cancer. Thanks for your help and support!
