Jennifer Johnson's Ride
Why I Ride ...
My name is Jenny Johnson, I'm 29 and a third time rider with the PMC. Over the past 4 years the PMC has become a part of my being. When the snow melts, I know it's time to ride, when I ride, I have time to think, when I think, I realize the impact that this organization has on the lives of so many people. Some statistics show 1 in 3 women and 1 and 2 men will have cancer. I look at my friends and family and I think - when it is one of us - might there be a cure? Hopefully, but maybe not - that's why I ride - because this disease will effect each and every one of us, at some point in our lives.....but maybe by the time I have children and grandchildren that won't be the case.
Last year my grandmother had just had major facial reconstructive surgery to remove melanomas. The recovery was long and painful and left what she now calls a highway on her face. A few weeks after the surgery was last years PMC ride. For past rides, she has been there at the end of the first day and the second. Of course this year was a bit different - but sure enough, as I passed the hundreds of smiling people on the way to Mass Maritime - there, in a big lovely hat, with stylish glasses was my grandma. We call each other the sparkle in our eyes. My sparkle, though a bit wounded was there at Bourne and then again the next day as I got off the ferry in Boston. Last years ride was definitely dedicated to my grandma.
This year TEAM NECN met our pedal partner Elton and his family. Hearing them talk about the men and women, doctors, nurses and staff at Dana Farber and impact that they had on each one of their lives. Listening to their story, hearing about there day-to-day and moment-to-moment fears, once again gave me such perspective.
I will ride 192 miles knowing that regardless of how tired I may feel, I remember I am healthy and I am living without the mental, physical and emotional pain that cancer patients and loved ones feel each day. I will ride knowing that each dollar raised brings us closer to the day when we can find a cure.
