Jeffrey Ichikawa's Ride
Why I Ride ...
These are daunting statistics; in 2008, 1.4 million Americans will be diagnosed and almost 600,000 will succumb to this dreaded disease. Cancer is still the leading cause of deaths in this country for those under 85 and affects just about all of us. There are very few of us who have not been touched by this disease in one way or another. This is why I have decided to once again participate in the Pan-Mass Challenge or PMC.
The PMC, which started in 1980, is the oldest bike-a-thon and raises more money than any other athletic event in the country. It's also the most efficient with more than 99 cents of every dollar raised going directly to the Jimmy Fund. To date, the PMC has contributed more than $200 million toward cancer research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. These funds provide the seed money that helps scientists and physicians pursue innovative research to help find a cure.
The 2-day ride starts in central Massachusetts in a town called Sturbridge and heads East toward Provincetown on Cape Cod. The first day involves 111 miles of riding until we reach Borne, just before arriving on the cape. The second day takes us 80 miles along the cape to finish in Provincetown.
For me, participating in the PMC is more than just about cancer statistics and raising money to eradicate this disease. From past experience, I know that being part of something like the PMC, meeting people and hearing the stories of what motivates people to take part in such an event teaches us that we can ALL make a difference. I once again have the honor of riding with Team Kermit, a team that honors the memory of Jared Branfman who died 2 years ago of spinal cancer. All of the funds raised by the team will be designated to the Jared Branfman Sunflowers For Life Fund For Pediatric Brain and Spinal Cancer Research at the Jimmy Fund.
So I've spent that last few months training really hard to finish the ride but I need your help to fulfill my goal of raising more than $5000 for this worthy cause. Any contribution will be greatly appreciated. Also, make sure to check with if your company will match any donations.
Thank You!
