Jeff Farrar's Ride

Why I Ride ...

Aug 6&7 20011 my Fifth year... I'll be riding from Sturbridge MA to Provincetown on the tip of cape cod-192 miles. I will leave Sturbridge at 5:30 am Saturday morning and ride to Bourne, where I'll spend the night at the Mass Maritime Academy.  Sunday morning I'll get up early before it gets too hot and finish the ride to Provincetown.

The first year I didnt know what I was in for but now I do! Now that I've done this a few times now I've actually been training this year with two friends going out for ever longer rides on Saturday mornings rain or shine. In addition to the physical challenge this year I'll be ready for the emotional impact of the ride. My first year an experienced PMC-er warned me that you dont finish the ride with dry eyes. Then I didnt know what he meant. Now I do. There are moments along the ride when you are hot, exhausted, and wondering when the next water stop is when you will catch a fleeting glimpse of a scene that puts a lump in your throat. Whether it's a cancer survivor rider being cheered on by their kids, or fellow riders stoping to help someone with a flat, or the thousands of volunteers who line the route and cheer you on. Last time I was passed by a cancer survivor who lost his leg to cancer and had his prostetic strapped across the back of his bike. How can I not keep pedaling? (I did mention I've been training this time right?)

Unfortunately cancer doesnt stop.. . Everyone knows people impacted by cancer. A parent, a relative, a friend, a co-worker or heaven forbid a child.  Cancer doesn't discriminate. Nor does it wait for recessions to end. I appreciate the current economic climate and understand your personal situation will dictate what if anything you can do. Each dollar is much appreciated.
With a 100% fundraising effectiveness rate due to the army of 2,200 volunteers and corporate sponsors this is money well donated.  We hope to raise $30Million this weekend in the nation's most successful athletic fundraiser.  Since the PMC's modest inception in 1980, PMC cyclists have raised and contributed more than $145 million for cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through its Jimmy Fund.  Humbly begun in 1980 with 36 riders who donated $10,000 this ride has grown over the years.  This year 4,800 riders will target a donation of $27 million.

Any donation is appreciated and is fully tax deductible. You can mail me a check made payable to the PMC/Jimmy fund or credit card info on the attached form or go online to my profile on the rides website and use a credit card if you prefer. WWW.pmc.org and my eGift ID is JF0152. I'd love it if you could also tell me if you'd like me to ride in honor of or in memory of someone special to you.

  Thank you.
