Why I Ride ...

I ride for my family, I ride to remember those I have lost, I ride for my friends, I ride so that future generations will have the Cure, I ride for the over 28 million people around the world that are living with cancer.  I know firsthand the profound effect that Cancer can have on a person’s life.  This is why I choose to participate in the 2-day (192 mile) ride.  I will be joined by over 2,000 riders sharing a similar passion and purpose as they have similar stories to tell.

  • At the age of 5, I lost my mother to stomach and pancreatic cancer.  She was only 34 years old.
  • At the age of 27, my oldest brother was diagnosed (April 2006) with a Gemistocytic Astrocytom Brain Tumor, on February 7 2009 he passed away.  He was only 40 years old.
  • At the age of 27,  my other brother was diagnosed (September 2006) with a soft tissue sarcoma known as a GIST (Gastro Intestinal Stromal Tumor). He was 35 years old.
  • At the age of 31, my 2nd mother was diagnosed (April 2010) with Transitional Cell Carcinoma.  She was only 49 years old.

Upon his diagnosis in 2006, my brother was told that he would not live 6 months due to the aggressive nature of his cancer.  Being a U.S Army Veteran (Gulf War) my brother only knew one thing to do and that was fight the cancer like it was the enemy.  Along with his Medical team headed by Dr. Rambo my brother immediately had surgery to remove a golf ball-sized tumor from his brain and began radiation and chemotherapy to treat his brain.  My brother maintained fit and refused to let the cancer get the best of him, then in 2008 a mass was caught on his routine scan and he once again visited Dr. Rambo and repeated the surgery and chemo treatments.  He continued his treatments through 2008 and then in December he was told that the chemo was no longer being effective in stopping the growth of the cancer.  He went to Duke Medical University on Jan 15th 2009 (My Birthday), where he learned he only had 2-4 weeks to live.  By this time the cancer had take over his brain and there was no turning back, he was a true fighter and fought the cancer all the way until the end outliving all of his doctor’s expectations.

Of course while dealing with a brother having a brain tumor in the fall of 2006 my family learned that my other brother Neil had been diagnosed with rare form of cancer; a GIST (Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor) after collapsing at work due to complications caused by the cancer. It is at this point that the Dana Farber Institute becomes such an important part of our family. They saved my brother who, without Dana Farber, would not be here today to ride with me! I first learned of the Pan Mass Challenge because of my older brother Neil and his stay at the Dana Farber Institute. I have been very fortunate to have the constant support of family and friends.  Dana Farber continues to be a big part of my brother’s life and so many other’s lives as they continue their research and daily treatment of people affected by cancer.

In April 2010, cancer once again struck my family, this time it stuck my step mom in the form of a rare kidney cancer that is only supposed to affect people much older than she is. My Mom had one kidney removed and is now going through targeted chemotherapy addressing tumors in her bladder.  She also faces various screenings to make sure the cancer has not spread.  She has an amazing team of doctors that are very committed to her health, and they are all working together to make sure she gets the best course of treatment.

I have participated in the Pan Mass Challenge for the last couple of years and many of you have helped me raise over $8,000 for cancer research alone and when combined with my brother’s efforts over the last 4 years that total is over $42,000.  I couldn't have achieved this without your support.  In addition to my individual efforts, I am part of a team, Paul’s Posse, which has raised over $1,000,000 dollars toward cancer research.  I am very fortunate to be part of such a great team.  You are part of that team.  100% of the proceeds go directly towards The Jimmy Fund. I want to express my sincere thanks to those of you that make it possible to exceed my fundraising goals every year since I started this journey.

I need your help once again in raising the money towards finding a cure.  Funding is being cut from many of these life saving cancer research programs. Places like Dana-Farber, rely more and more on these donations to sustain this critical cancer research.  It is vital that for our children’s future we do not let these programs fall to budget cuts.  I hope you will join me in this tremendous fight against cancer, just as my brother fought against it, by simply making a donation.  Just visit the following link below in the Orange Button marked “Donate to my Ride” to make your donation and please know that my family and I thank you from the bottoms of our hearts for your generosity.

Sincerely,

James Cameron
