Jeff Bloom's Ride

Why I Ride ...

Dear Friends and Family,

Thank you for visiting this site.  (You are looking at a picture of my daughters simply because I wanted to spare everyone a picture of me in my spandex shorts.)   I am doing the Pan-Mass Challenge for the first time and I would truly appreciate your support.

As you may know, the PMC is one of the most effective fundraisers in the battle against cancer.   Every dollar raised from this event goes directly to research for the cure and treatment of cancer.   Last year, the PMC contribution to the Jimmy Fund represented half of its annual revenue and the PMC was the largest single contributor to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.   (Continued below...)

I am riding in honor and in memory of too many people to list here.  But I think that describes the majority of us.  Cancer is such an insidious and far reaching disease -- I can't think of anyone who has not been affected by it, whether a personal or loved one's battle.   (Men have a 1 in 2 chance of developing a cancer in their lifetime; women a 1 in 3 chance.)  But despite the pervasiveness of the disease, researchers have made real progress.   So it's not over simplistic or unrealistic to say that a donation today will save lives tomorrow.

I am doing the 180-mile ride and have made a fundraising commitment as my miniscule step for cancer research and treatment.   Seeing the strength and spirit of those who have faced cancer or have had to live in the wake of it has inspired me to "do something," albeit small.

It has been mentioned to me that an economic meltdown is not the most opportune time to ask people for money.  That is certainly true but I have never been one you would say has good timing.  That being said, I will omit any of the "as little as a coffee-a-day" lines and simply say that I am truly grateful for whatever you can contribute and I understand that many cannot give as much as they'd like.   If you are able to donate anything, it's not only a good deed, but also a tax deduction -- who doesn't need a tax deduction?

I also ask that you please let me know if I may include on my jersey the name of someone you know who has battled cancer.  Riding in honor or in memory of your loved one not only will be a testament to your contribution, but will also help push me along where training falls short.

Please contact me any time if you have any questions or thoughts.  Thank you!
