Greg Birne's Ride
Why I Ride ...
I am dedicating this year's ride to both of my parents, who passed away in in 2006 and 2009 after long struggles against cancer, that lasted for years. Getting out on the bike to help find a cure offers a positive way to deal with these losses. I am also dedicating the ride to everyone who we can help by raising money to find a cure for cancer.
As I did last year, I will be riding again with a team, called LEGS (Legs Ending Great Suffering) to help with training, but also to have a "pedal partner." Pedal Partners are children who are being treated at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's pediatric oncology center, the Jimmy Fund Clinic. The PMC Pedal Partner Program matches Jimmy Fund Clinic patients with PMC cyclists who ride in their honor. For the children, being a pedal partner provides a distraction from treatments, while also introducing them to new fiends. The children become part of a large group fighting for a cure for the disease for which they are being treated. Pedal partners often meet teams at rest stops on the ride, and that provides a great motivator to keep our legs moving!
