Edward White's Ride

Why I Ride ...

Hello to PMC 2012 - this year getting to the $4300.00 fundraising requirement is a not going to happen without  your help.

As most all of you know, I ride specifically for a young hero of mine.  Brent McCreesh was diagnosed with Neroblastoma at age 2 .  Thanks to his family, friends, and donors like yourself Brent is soon to be 10 years old.  He is a true survivor who continues with the regular check-ups, needle sticks, and MRI's all with a great smile and positive attitude.  He is a Yankees fan, a Manchester United Soccer fan, and a PMC fan.   No doubt his biggest hero is his dad Mike McCreesh who rides the PMC every year, participates in road races, and shaves his head all for the cause.    I think the only event Mike did not enter was the TeamBrentwheels triathlon.  (This was a women's only event, so for that, Mike can be excused. )

This year I would truly appreciate your support in helping me to achieve this goal.   I've seen many thank you letters from the Surgeons at  the Dana Farber  Cancer Institute thanking the team for the monies donated to the cause.   The doctors have shared that the monies have specically gone towards such things as: new facilities, new equipment, new doctors, new services, and improved patient care, all with the purpose of reducing and and ultimately eliminating childhood cancer.  (please read below for the most recent letter sent as a result of PMC 2011)

Thanks in advance for your contributions. You can donate on-line, or mail your checks payable to PMC,

Dr. Lisa Diller, Clinical Director of Pediatric Oncology, Dana-Farber/Children's Hospital; Professor of Pediatrics, Harvard Medical School:

We are having a very exciting year.

 ·         We continue to grow the MIBG program (we treated 27 children since opening the room) and expect to soon join a group of national investigators to use MIBG therapy in newly diagnosed, high risk patients.

·         We treated 13 high risk patients with antibody.  We have another antibody protocol currently under review by the institutional review board, for treatment of patients who have relapsed.

·         We continue to work on targeting the ALK gene in the lab. We are testing new ALK inhibitor compounds and also combination therapies to increase efficacy using a mouse Neuroblastoma model. We also have a clinical trial open looking at an ALK inhibitor in patients with a known ALK abnormality in their tumor.

·         We are working on an agent that targets myc, an oncogene often involved in Neuroblastoma.

·         Our researchers are able to use our Core Facilities to look for agents that alone, or in combination, target Neuroblastoma cells.   Because of your support our laboratory investigators make use of these important and "high-end" technologies, such as new compound screening and mouse imaging.

·         We now have a personalized cancer medicine research program in place that will allow us to test the tumors to identify the specific abnormalities present in a specific patient's own tumor and have a protocol written and about to open that will allow us to start doing this work in patients.

We rely on the TeamBrent funds to support these programs, making sure that nursing and research personnel help patients get through these therapies and that we understand better what works and doesn't work.   We were thrilled that you surpassed your team fundraising goals this year.  In today’s challenging economic climate, this feat is incredible, yet all the more needed.
