Why I Ride ...

Dear Family and Friends:


This will be my third year riding in the Pan Mass Challenge!  Oh how the time flies!  The last year brought lots of changes.  Though this has been a very hectic and exciting time for me I have continued to ride my bike and raise funds for cancer research in memory of my late husband, Barry.  


I often think back to the day in November of 2007, when Barry was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma, bile duct cancer. We were shocked, saddened, and determined to fight the fight.  Though he lost his courageous battle in June of 2008, I am committed to continuing the fight against cancer.    
 

Many of you know that three years ago when I decided to ride I didn't even own a bike.  I had to go out and buy a bike, a helmet and those wretched bike shorts.  I've long since gotten over the embarrassment of sporting spandex in public.  I am willing to throw fashion to the wind because since 1980 the PMC has contributed $303 million to cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.  100% of every rider-raised dollar goes directly to cancer research and treatment!  It feels great to be a part of something so monumental and I have all of you to thank!


My 2009 and 2010 rides were fabulous.  Cindy, my riding partner and I rode along side so many wonderful people.  But what was most astonishing was the people standing on the side of the road holding signs and cheering us on.  We felt very special.  The whole day was a very emotional experience.  
 
To many of you, this will sound crazy but this year I have decided to ride the 84 mile Wellesley to Bourne route.   I'm told that if you can ride 50 miles you can ride 84 miles.  We'll see.   Actually, I promise to hold up my end of the  bargain and ride my bike.
