Elaine Shapiro's Ride

Why I Ride ...

Dear Family and Friends:

This will be my second year riding in the Pan Mass Challenge.  Though this has been a very hectic and exciting time for me I have continued to ride my bike and raise funds for cancer research in memory of my late husband, Barry Fox.

I often think back to the day in November of 2007, when Barry was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma, bile duct cancer. We were shocked, saddened, and determined to fight the fight.  Though he lost his courageous battle in June of 2008, I am committed to continuing the fight against cancer.

Many of you know that last year when I decided to ride I didn't even own a bike.  I had to go out and buy a bike, a helmet and those wretched bike shorts.  I've long since gotten over the embarrassment of sporting spandex in public.  I am willing to throw fashion to the wind because last year the PMC contributed $30 million (100 percent of every rider-raised dollar) to cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.  It felt great to be a part of something so monumental and I have all of you to thank!

Like last year, I have been working out regularly and I have been doing practice rides with Cindy, my riding partner.  Our ride in 2009 was fabulous!  We rode along side so many wonderful people.  But what was most astonishing was the people standing on the side of the road holding signs and cheering us on.  There was one family that set up an unofficial rest stop on their front lawn.  The fact that their home was at the top of a particularly steep hill was enough for us to make a pit stop.  They offered us water, sports drinks, snacks and even m&m's!  They took our pictures like we were celebrities and they even offered us, complete strangers, the use of their bathroom!  We were blown away by their hospitality and by the signs and cheers from others.  The whole day was a very emotional experience.

Once again, the two of us will be riding the Wellesley Loop, 47 miles on Sunday, August 8th.  I promise to do the hard part and sweat and pedal the entire route with a smile on my face!   (Barry wouldn't have had it any other way!)  But I need your help.  I'm asking you to write a check.  The funds I raise go directly to cancer research and treatment.  By supporting me, you can make a difference in the fight against cancer.
