David Pemstein's Ride

Why I Ride ...

Dear Friends,

No one likes to hear about other people's colonoscopies. Like mine every couple of years, or my mother's since she had a portion of her colon surgically removed at age 45, or my grandfather's before he died of colon and liver cancer at age 64. So I'll talk about sitting on a bicycle for 200 miles, which is not entirely dissimilar.

Since my first ride 5 years ago, several friends and family members have been diagnosed with numerous different cancers.  This year I'll be riding in the 32nd annual Pan-Mass Challenge to support their battle against this disease.

The Pan-Mass Challenge is a 2-day, 200-mile bicycle ride to raise money for the Jimmy Fund to fight cancer.
The PMC raises more money for charity than any other single athletic event in the country.  Since it began in 1980, the PMC has raised over $338 million for cancer research and treatment.  Last year over 230,000 people made contributions to the PMC, and the PMC donated 100% of every contribution directly to the Jimmy Fund, which supports the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.  The PMC raises half of the Jimmy Fund's annual revenue and is a critical source of funds to fight cancer, and in particular pediatric cancers.  Thanks in large part to the Jimmy Fund, survival rates for pediatric oncology patients can now exceed 80%.  Dana-Farber's Jimmy Fund Clinic remains one of the world's premier centers for cancer research and treatment.

This year over 5,500 cyclists will ride across Massachusetts in the PMC on August 4-5.  I will be riding from Sturbridge to Provincetown.  Each cyclist on that route has committed to raise at least $4,300 for the Jimmy Fund.  Again, every single dollar raised will go directly to the Jimmy Fund for cancer research and treatment.

Please join me in reaching this year's goal.

Thank you,

David
