David Katz's Ride

Why I Ride ...

Here are the top 10 reasons why you should sponsor me in this year's PMC: 10. 100% of the money raised ($35 million last year) goes directly to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute through the Jimmy Fund, and is used to fund research not covered by government funds. That's right -- every buck raised goes to the Jimmy Fund. This is an unbelievable stat: no other charitable organization is able to operate so efficiently. Amazing! 9. Last year my team raised $114,000. We're trying to step it up again this year. 8. While the PMC is a <>200 mile bike ride from Sturbridge, MA to Provincetown, I always add an extra 100 miles by riding from the New York state border to Sturbridge the day before the PMC start, making the event a true pan-Massachusetts challenge. 7. I ride for my dad's brother, my oldest friend's mom, a good friend's young daughter and wife, my grandparents, and other friends and family on each year's ride. One of the special things about the ride is the stories people tell about the people they love. What better way to honor them than to help fight the battle to cure cancer? 6. The event is incredibly joyful and inspiring. There are hundreds of cancer survivors riding in the event, and it's impossible not to be humbled by the magnitude of everyone's stories. 5. I really need your help! I've made a significant commitment to raising money, as has my entire team. We try to raise more and more each year, so your support is critical. 4. Since you're going to make some charitable donations each year, I hope you consider the PMC worthy of your annual charitable giving "budget." 3. It's tax-deductible. Of course! 2. By donating you qualify for my annual epic PMC weekend synopsis. It makes great bathroom reading! 1. It's really important. Every year the PMC becomes more deeply engrained in my life. My first year I rode with five friends, three years ago with eight, two years ago with 15, and last year with 20 close friends. Years ago I rode my bike across the U.S. Five years ago the four year old daughter of one of the guys I rode with was diagnosed with cancer. She's fought hard, and her cancer is now in remission. I ride for her, and every year someone else I know is diagnosed and is fighting to overcome it. The PMC is a way for the healthy to fight for the ill, and for all of us to invest in the future cure. I'm *able* to do  his, and it's my way of honoring and supporting the people I love who have suffered from this terrible disease.
