Donna Kleinman's Ride

The Number 10

Dear Friends and Family,

Thank you for taking the time to read my story.

The PMC( founded in 1980) is the largest, most successful sports fundraising event in the world, attracting 5,000 riders and 2,500 volunteers to central and south-east Massachusetts for a two-day cycling event in August each year.
Cyclists will travel from 36 states and eight countries to ride in the  PMC this year.  More than 300 riders will be cancer survivors or current patients. Cyclists range in age from 13 to 83. The average PMC cyclist is 43 years old, trains for three months, solicits 40 sponsors, and raises more than $6,000. During PMC weekend and throughout the year, 3,000 volunteers donate their time and 200 corporations provide in-kind donations of products or services.

The PMC  hope to raise $ 31 million this year ...and I am asking for your help.

This August will be my 10th PMC. It is so hard to believe that it s been 10 years since I rode my first PMC. Those 10 years have been filled with wonderful memories, thousands of miles pedaled ..and helping the Dana Farber Cancer Institue get  closer to a cure every year. A few weeks ago in spin class I began to think  about the commitment of riding another PMC. I vacilated..could I do it again and then the light bulb clicked on...as the sweat poured off my face. The light bulb was the # 10 ,it is 2010 .....Phat Tuesday is celebrating their 10th year as a team.... and this will be my 10th PMC.

Since 10 seems to be the number of the year , here are 10 reason to give.. if you think of others , please do share them with me ...as we all have our own reasons for giving.
# 1- Cancer is affecting too many people and we need to support the research to stop the numbers that face the dreaded diagnosis.
# 2 - I lost my husband of 11 year s back in 1993 , with your help future generations may be spared the same sadness
# 3- Everyday 3000 people are diagnosed , yes 3000!!
# 4-Today nearly 80 % of children and more than 60 % of adults with cancer ARE  surviving
# 5-Jimmy Fund dollars have enabled Dana-Farber's researchers and clinicians to pursue new ideas and to make discoveries now in use worldwide
#6-Each year, nearly 1.4 million new cases of cancer are diagnosed in the United States, a figure that does not include the 900,000 cases of skin cancer diagnosed annually.
#7-Cancer is the second leading cause of death (after heart disease) in the United States, accounting for 560,000 deaths every year.
#8-This year, over 250,000 women and men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and over 40,000 will die from this horrific disease.
#9-Support the best patient outcomes in Boston , Dana Farber patients enjoy the highest standards of cancer care and treatment.
#10- " cancer free"

Since the required minimum is $ 4200 and I do not have any large corporate sponsors to help with my fundraising minimum; this idea worked well last year so I am happy to report I am doing it again . The offer stands, simply donate $ 100 or more and you  will recieve a batch of homemade chocolate chip cookies ! Yes a batch and they will be delivered fresh to you. All you have to do is donate $100.

I am starting to train and always begin wondering if I will ever  get in shape enough to pedal to the finish in Provincetown. But something about this event, the people I will meet along the way, the stories I will hear all make it do able. My pedal strokes pale in comparison to the pain and  challenges of facing and fighting a cancer diagnosis.

Feel free to browse the photos here, they capture the spirit of the PMC.
