Daniel Field's Ride

Why I Ride ...

My journey started on December 10, 2002 when I was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor shortly after a seizure at work.  I think like everyone, when I heard the word “cancer”, I thought the worst...  I was 38 and had two young sons and a wife… I thought, I will not be here for them… this was my worst fear and it was a devastating thought.

Now 9 years later after two brain surgeries and radiation treatment, I consider myself a pretty lucky guy.  I have been here to watch my sons grow into young men and here for my wife in the good times and the bad.  I could not have made it through this ordeal without them.  I was also very fortunate to have a great team of doctors who designed my treatment plan and still watch for any recurrence to this day.  Because of this experience I felt compelled to give back to the people that have helped me and so many others.   Through cancer, I found cycling and through cycling in the PMC I am able to give back to the very doctors and nurses at the Jimmy Fund responsible for my health.

Each year it gets a little harder and I need to focus on training earlier, but I cannot imagine life without the Pan-Mass Challenge and I plan to ride as long as I am able.  This year will be my tenth year overall, including riding for the last four years as part of team LEGS… the team name which stands for Legs Ending Great Suffering, takes its name seriously and each year we work with the PMC to help a family lessen their burden by connecting with a pedal partner… these are children affected by this horrible disease and it is the team’s mission to help the kids feel special and help the families as they work through a very difficult time.  They are the inspiration and the motivation for us, and hopefully we are able to provide them with a little happiness.  The team shirt says it all… the artwork is from the kids and is a constant beautiful reminder of why we ride… so that some day, no family will lose a child, or a sibling, or a father or a mother.

So, my cancer is 9 years distant now, but I am reminded twice daily as I take my anti-seizure medication and every 4 months when I go for my MRI to confirm all is well.  My therapy is to focus on the positive, when I train and especially on long rides, when no matter how tired I am I know I am alive and moving forward.  I ask you to please support my efforts as I work towards my fundraising goal for this very important cause.

The PMC is super efficient, passes on 100% of every dollar directly to the Jimmy Fund. So far, the PMC has given over 300 million dollars to the Jimmy Fund.

If you would like to donate to my ride this year, please use the "Donate to my ride" button on this web page... you can make a donation by credit card. You will receive a confirmation email of your tax-deductible donation.

Alternately, your tax-deductible check can be made payable to "PMC/Jimmy Fund". I will be happy to pick up donations or you can mail them to me at my home address:
